This is a project of Internews. If you're not
familiar with Internews we are a
media development organization.
So, we work with journalists in media
organizations around the world helping
them improve their coverage.
It's in a sense telling you a story
about what's happening with fisheries
around the world. And also I will then focus
more on what's happening about fisheries regionally
within Asia. It is very interesting to me
that even though some of you work in the
environment, in fact many of you write about
the environment, very few write about fisheries.
So in Hong Kong, which is a city of about
8 million people, we import seafood now from
two thirds, sixty-six percent, of all the
countries on earth. And that number's increasing.
So it can't go on forever.
Over the last ten years, Asian economies have
greatly increased the demand for seafood.
And China is the leading global producer -
they produce a lot of seafood. And also
the major exporter.
China is the biggest agricultural country in the
world, so getting a lot of attention of sustain-
ability of that sector is great. Very important.
As an American journalist,I'm bringing my
American perspective to China.
China is rapidly growing and rapidly developing
and yet environmental reporting is relatively
underdeveloped. I really learn so much from the
journalists and we have eight really outstanding
journalists, six from Beijing, one from Guangzhou,
and they're representing a variety of media.
They're very experienced journalists and I
know that I will learn a lot.
We really hope it's a launch pad for people
who are working on sustainability to be
able to advance the work that they're doing.
