Once we've been practicing Yoga for awhile we can take a deeper practice to really de-funkify
the system and super tone our organs of elimination. This is called nauli.
Nauli kriya, the nauli purification is first mentioned in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika which
is a yoga text from about 600 or 700 hundred years ago. It is one of the shat kriya, one
of the 6 purifications. It strengthens our digestive fire, eliminates diseases that relate
to digestion. It's also mentioned in the Gheranda Samhita, a 300 hundred year old text. It says
that we strengthen our digestive fire. So that we can nourish ourselves from the food
that we take and we can get rid of the waste, the funk the junk.
Nauli is translated in a few ways. It can mean a channel. So we are purifying the channels
of our digestive organs. It can also refer to nau as in a boat - we are turing out stomach
in such a way that it looks how a boat would be tossing out at sea.
We're going to practice nauli first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, and we
are going to avoid nauli if you're pregnant or trying to get pregnant, or on your Ladie's
Holiday, Your period. Here's how.
First - exhale completely. Hold your stomach in and try to release the center then draw
it in. Release the center. Next - exhale completely and draw it in. Try
to isolate - Right Left. Side to Side. Finally - coordinate all of that on an exhalation
that is held out. From center to side to side - Circling around and practicing nauli. It
works.
