Fossils by Ethan Kollmann Hi! My name is Ethan Kollmann. I am a part of the Mother Lode Mineral
Society. I am a Jr. Rockhound. This is my third year doing a case. My passion is fossils.
Today I will show you some of my fossils. What are fossils? Fossils are the hardened
remains or trace of an animal or plant that lived thousands or millions of years ago.
These are ammonites. Ammonites may be the most known types of fossils. They mostly are
spiraled and ribbed. They lived in the seas 240 million to 265 million years ago. When
the dinosaurs became extinct, they did too. What are agate limb casts? Agate limb casts
were formed in cavities of vocanic ash that were pieces of wood. When the ash was hot
it cause the wood to burn creating a hole called a cavity. After that agate built up
in the cavity in the shape of the original limb wood. That is how its name became agate
limb cast. It comes in many colors, but the most popular is pink. What is a megalodon
shark tooth? This is a megalodon shark tooth. Megalodon sharks lived 1.6 to 2 million years
ago. They were up to sixty feet long and weighed up to 50 tons. It was bigger than a T-Rex.
This is one of the extremely collectible teeth. What is coprolite? These are coprolite. Coprolite
is fossilized feces, aka poop and is considered "trace" fossils. Like most fossils, they remain
in their original shape. What are fossil plants? Fossil plants such as ferns are found commonly.
Some have the same structure as they do today. Mostly, only parts of the plants are found.
What are trilobites? This is a trilobite. There are shelled segmented creatures that
lived millions of years ago. They are known to be our planets earliest complex life forms.
If you were wondering what trilobite means it is "three lobed". What are Stromatolites?
Stromatolites are layered deposits, mainly made of limestone formed by the growth of
algea. Their range of age is 542 million years ago to current time. They can be smooth and
be in an arrange of colors. What is a mammoth tooth? This a mammoth molar tooth. A mammoth
is a furry elephant that lived up to 200,000 years ago. This molar is around, 15,000 years
old. What is this? This is a South American Cave Bear paw fossil. They lived up to 100,000
years ago. South American Cave Bears were the same size as the bears we see now. This
is my sister, Emma. She is 12 years old and helped my video tape. She is my cue card girl
and my choreographer. © 2014 Ethan Kollmann
