Good question. Most of our environment most of our products, are designed for a prototypical
person. A person probably in their mid twenties to mid thirties. More often than not, male
and without a disability. The better that the environment can accommodate a wide range
of people, the easier it is for those people to be integrated into the environment. Why
is that important? Well it is difficult to go to a school if you can’t get in the school.
It’s difficult to find a job if workplaces aren’t designed in such a way that people
can get in and use them. So universal design is an attempt to create an environment so
that people can use them. I think that’s important. I think that all people should
be able to, to interact with society to the largest extent possible. And the design of
the environment and the design of products people use, the design of signage, the design
of information technology is a major way people have access to society.
