My name is Bernard Richebé.
I am a professional photographer and I work with both digital and silver film.
I was trained in conventional film photography for many years
and have been interested in digital technology for a very long time,
since it was first introduced.
You might say that I learned to make the best use of both technologies,
and obviously the two techniques overlap since there was a transition period
in which silver film technology was still more common than digital.
Digital is now much more widely used
but nevertheless, it is important to have experience (in the conventional technique).
I also conduct training courses for Photoshop
using the Photoshop workbooks I wrote in collaboration with Cyril Bruneau.
This has given me a good understanding
of the potential problems photographers might encounter with digital technology.
As for the new digital negative technology developed on the HP printers
that I use to make my digital prints, I can see 2 advantages;
first it allows me to produce large-format negatives.
I can then use this digital negative to print them on silver paper.
This gives me an additional negative that I can then use
to produce contact prints like we used to do in the past.
The negative printed at the end, thanks to this printer
becomes a new original that can be stored so that if there are any problems
with the digital files, hard drive, CD or DVD, above all you have a new original to print
on black and white silver paper with slightly different results.
Some people prefer to work with silver films while others prefer digital,
depending on the type of work they are doing.
I believe that this new technology has a great future
since it allows you to use both techniques and opens up new possibilities.
It connects the conventional technique with the future
which is almost definitely one hundred percent digital.
