As the war on drugs rages on in Mexico, former President Vicente Fox is pushing to legalise
marijuana in the hopes of ending the bloodshed. Fox gathered leading marijuana activists for
a symposium to discuss the issue as he tries to raise public and political support on the
issue. (SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER MEXICAN PRESIDENT VICENTE FOX, SAYING: "(There is
an) urgent need of clear, objective information and that's one of the purposes." More than
70,000 people have been killed in the country's war on drugs. Mexico's current president Enrique
Pena Nieto has opposed legalisation, but has not shut the door completely, saying the legalisation
of recreational marijuana use in Washington and Colorado states has given him a more open
mind than before.
