The CorelDRAW welcome screen is very helpful.
See all the resources that help you use CorelDRAW.
Try the [Gallery tab] there are many examples created by
some of the best CorelDRAW users in the world.
The [Learning Tools tab] also has many resources.
& watch the [Video Tutorials].
X5 videos are also available on Youtube.
they are also a good resource.
The [Quick Start Tab] is your starting place.
Recently saved or opened documents are here
Hover mouse over titles to see a preview
of what that document is.
To go to an alternate location,
click [Open other] & navigate to your document.
for inspiration, try [New from template].
there are many ideas to help you get started.
I’m starting out by clicking [New blank document].
next is the ‘Create a New Document’ dialog.
here you can name the document,
I am calling this document “Design Basics”,
Note: by default the document is setup for professional print
and your home printer, so click [OK] or make changes.
For example, you can set up for web based graphics,
or change from millimetres to inches
So make your settings & click [OK].
Note: CorelDRAW is a vector based drawing program.
This means in CorelDRAW we create with lines,
straight lines, curved lines & objects made of lines.
Objects can have all types of fills.
It's easy to work with text.
There are hundreds of typefaces
To choose from for your project.
Whatever shape you can think of,
creating that with the right tools is easy.
The CorelDRAW color engine is precise
& we will learn more about that soon.
You can import images from your digital camera
or various types of clip art images.
A digital image is called a bitmap image.
To edit a bitmap you need a bitmap editor like Corel PHOTO-PAINT.
Its very easy.
Select image & on the [Property bar], [Edit Bitmap] appears.
Click.. & the image opens inside of Corel PHOTO-PAINT.
here is where we can edit,
apply special effects, work with color,
and even cut the image from the background
& place it on a different background.
I am going to Click [Adjust] & [Auto Adjust] then [Save]
the image is re-inserted into CorelDRAW with the changes.
Working in a vector based program is powerful.
Vector designs are completely scalable.
We can scale to a small size or to an incredibly large size
without loss of quality.
It won't be long and you too will create designs like this,
You just need to learn the tools.
Let’s look at some of those tools now.
First, we need to consider the tool bar.
Hover the mouse over any tool
& a tool tip appears.
The tool tip describes what the tool does
If it has keyboard shortcut it will be in brackets.
[F5] would select the ‘Freehand tool’.
A number of tools have a small triangle.
This indicates more tools are available.
Click the triangle to see a [flyout menu]
& the additional tools within that set.
I will now select the ‘Artistic Media tool’.
notice as I select the artistic media tool,
the [Hints Docker] updates with hints about the tool.
Any tool selected updates the [Hints Docker].
this release also has a Videos tab.
The Videos tab is in the [Hints Docker]
& contains great tips for you to
learn how to use CorelDRAW.
If I click ‘Filling & Outlining Objects’
the video opens up & begins to play.
This video shows how to click on a color well
& fill an object with color.
The videos are a good way to learn CorelDRAW
if you're new to CorelDRAW.
Watch for the [Hints docker] it is very helpful.
Let's take a look at the ‘Artistic Media tool’.
Notice there are a number of properties now available
on the [Property Bar]. Note: every tool has different properties.
Here we have access to four more tools;
the ‘Brush tool’, ‘Sprayer tool’, ‘Calligraphic tool’ & ‘Pressure tool’.
The ‘Calligraphic tool’.
This tool creates strokes that look like
Strokes from a calligraphy pen.
The ‘Sprayer tool’, has categories.
Inside each category there are spray patterns.
Choose a spray pattern then draw & that pattern appears.
while selected, that pattern can be change to another.
Select a new pattern and it will update.
The ‘Brush tool’, draws lines like brush strokes.
choose a category and from the
dropdown menu choose a brushstroke then draw.
you can use a pen tablet or a mouse.
A stroke can be changed while it's selected by choosing another.
Choose a color, or right click the ‘No Color well’ to remove outline
This tool creates great effects.
I will now select ‘Preset’.
‘Preset’ has a number of preset strokes.
whether using a pen tablet or mouse,
these strokes simulate sketching on a pad.
I will demonstrate how easy it is
to create a design in a few seconds.
Now I am lowering the stroke width
to add some smaller branch highlights.
That was very easy to do.
-
Tapping the [Spacebar] re-selects the ‘Pick tool’.
I will now select the object.
To [Select] an object, either click on the object or draw a marquee,
which is this dotted blue rectangle, around the object.
Now I will tap [Delete] on the keyboard.
Drawing basic shapes is very easy,
to do show this I will select the ‘Ellipse tool’.
The Ellipse tool has a [Flyout menu] available.
as do all these other tools.
[Flyout menus] can be moved around.
These dotted lines are called [Grab handles].
Grab a menu & pull away to create a toolbox.
The toolbox can be reshaped & repositioned.
It is the same for all [Flyout menus].
Click the grab handle & drag, then reshape & place.
Notice the same dots appear around the interface.
To undock the toolbox,
click on the grab handle & drag.
It can also be easily put back
to the last docked location
with a double click on the title bar.
To move toolbars, make sure toolbars are unlocked.
Right click on any toolbar
and at the bottom of the menu see [Lock Toolbars].
Notice how its not selected.
Click on it to select and the toolbars become locked.
So If you can't see grab handles, then
choose [Lock Toolbars] again to deselect.
Now I am going to select the Ellipse tool
to demonstrate how the drawing tools work.
They all work the same way.
Click & then drag the mouse
holding the left mouse button down.
to create the size & shape of the object.
Then release the mouse & see the [Resizing handles]
that appear around the object.
To scale, select any of the four corner handles & drag
Scaling maintains the exact same shape but resizes.
You can also use the left or the right [Horizontal Handles]
which does change the shape of the object.
The same applies to the [Vertical Handles]
Click the small x in the middle
to move the object to a new location.
In CorelDRAW X6 under [Window]&[Dockers]
Open the [Object Properties manager].
The [Object Properties manager] has been updated
now providing access to all of an objects properties.
These properties showing belong to this object.
To make a change click the property and change it.
It’s easy to make changes to the selected object.
When you have a number of [Dockers] open
Like these two dockers the [Hints docker]
& the [Object Properties docker], its easy to alternate.
For more working area collapse the dockers.
OR expand the docker again to use it.
The [Object Properties docker] is great for text work.
To type, select the [Text tool], click, then type..
The [Object Properties docker] displays text properties.
While selected, if I hover over a typeface,
the text updates, there are hundreds to choose from.
I can change the fill color.
Apply an outline.
Change the outline color.
Even convert everything to upper case.
Working with text & the Object Properties docker is brilliant
