DR. FEDERMAN: I've been in the VA
since 1986 so I've seen a lot of transformation
and I'm incredibly proud of what we have accomplished
and what we can accomplish in the future.
DR. DALSANIA: Across the VA system, especially
in primary care, there is a high burnout rate.
That's the truth.
People are just fatigued and stressed all the time.
DR. SANDERS: Being in a bit of the rat race,
and, and, being, sort of, in the real-life demands of medicine,
time demands, and patient demands, and documentation
demands, and all this other stuff we get caught up in,
we can lose that sense of what really brought us here.
HEIDI BOLLING: And something needs
to bring us back, bring us back to the calling and the mission
that we had when we became physical therapists,
nurses, pharmacists, physicians.
DR. KEARNY: The VA is in the midst of a remarkable shift,
and I think is poised to lead the way in a transformation
in healthcare nationally.
DR. DALSANIA: So our solution is really
to find a way to decrease that burn out
and to bring the joy back into delivering care.
DR. KEARNY: The VA is promoting health and wellbeing programs
for Veterans.
We're moving beyond the role of disease care and disease
prevention, and also including health
and wellbeing of Veterans as a priority.
And this is actually part of the mission statement of the VA.
DR. SANDERS: This is different.
I look at this as an opportunity.
It's an opportunity for clinicians, for our patients,
and for the whole healthcare system, for that matter,
to embark upon the type of medicine
that we all dream about, and we hope to be in an environment
that we can practice.
DR. CARTER: There are times they want
to do other things than what, you know,
we traditionally offer, and now I
have a better understanding of what the evidence is,
and I'm able to offer, you know, alternative treatments that
really are effective, that do make a difference, that
can serve as a bridge to all of the other great things
that I currently offer veterans.
DR. SANDERS: To transform and change healthcare, truly.
And what an honor to be a part of that.
