Hi this is Dr. Susan Riegg from susanrieggmd.com
Today is Tuesday, January 14th, and I am on day number fourteen
of my HCG diet. My weight
loss has really been stalled.
I have just inched down very very slightly and
and went down to 179.5
I'm experiencing
one of the minimal side effects of HCG
and that is that I have some
constipation. so I thought it might be a good time to talk about some of the side
effects of HCG. Of course
it's one of the things I go over with all the patients and
certainly a valid question.
As far as what are all the side effects of HCG?
There really aren't many side effects, they're minimal.
The three major side effects are headache, muscle cramps,
and constipation.
As far as the headaches, typically patients are getting headaches
if they're really addicted to carbs
and sugars, caffeine, things like that.
Then when they go on the weight loss program
and they're really stopping that stuff cold turkey, they're really
just getting detox headaches. So if
the patients just take some Advil or Tylenol or
any type of pain reliever over the counter stuff that they usually take,
they can just weather the storm just fine.
The headaches typically will just last three or four days.
Most patients dont have headaches at all. Just the patients that really
are used to eating a lot carbohydrate. A lot of pasta and bread, and cereal and
things like that. If they're really accustomed to eating that every day
they'll be susceptible to headaches.
The 2nd symptom that's a little bit more common
are the muscle cramps and charlie horses.
The reason for this is because we're typically losing weight
very quickly, very dramatically
and losing a lot of potassium in the urine and this results in
decreasing potassium levels.
This is one of the, of course, obvious reasons why we always want to check a
complete metabolic panel and really look at potassium levels before patients
start
HCG diet.
It's easily remedied by taking a potassium supplement
but it can be a little bit uncomfortable.
So the favorite supplement that we recommend is the orthomolecular
product. They have just a potassium supplement and then they also have a
combination of
magnesium and potassium. I think the most common symptom is the constipation,
and probably the reason most patients get constipated is because they're eating
so much
green leafy vegetables, particularly lettuce and spinach and things like that,
and there's a lot of
iron in those vegetables and that can be very constipating.
So we always try and prepare patients
and make them aware that this is a possibility.
So are first
line of treatment is to add in some
magnesium supplement while they're on the diet.
If that doesn't work, our second favorite supplement is this
orthomolecular super aloe. The more gentle
treatment is super aloe 250 and if that doesn't work
we'll use the super aloe 450.
On rare occasions if people are very impacted,
we'll recommend the glycerin suppositories in very severe cases.
This is a little bit of a joke,
but this is actually inspired by one of our previous
team members, who I won't name, but her first name is Tiffany. She was absolutely
in love with
sugarless gummy bears!
You really have to read the reviews of this on Amazon. As you can see,
they have a very significant
laxative effect! (Laughs)
If you read some of these reviews, you can just eat
one or two of these and get a very nice
laxative effect. (Laughing). Now I am in no way recommending this,
but actually I'm considering trying this for myself.
So you can see there are many, many reviews on Amazon,
and you can just take one index is a wonderful colon cleanser! (Laughing)
They're laxatives!
This review says "At my hospital we once required patience to take
a barium enema before a colon endoscopy.
Now they just prescribed 5 these little
sugar-free gummy bears." (Laughing)
This person wrote in saying that they lost 26 pounds on the
sugar free gummybear diet.
So just keep in mind, I'm not recommending that, but
if you want a good laugh go to Amazon read the reviews on the
Haribo sugar free gummy bear
candy. It's very, very humorous.
The final side effects is that
you're going to have a large expense for new clothes.
Because after you've lost about 10 to 12 to 14 pounds,
none of your pants are going to fit you anymore. You're really going to have to go out
if you don't already have smaller pants in your closet.
You're going to have to go out shopping and get smaller sizes.
