I’m Sharon Richter, a Registered Dietitian.
Here’s some good news for anyone living with diabetes: Making smart eating choices
may be easier than you think. That’s because your most important first step is to practice
the same healthy meal habits that apply to everyone.
Here are some tips to get your started:
Buy nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, especially the non-starchy kinds like spinach, carrots
and broccoli. Never leave a grocery store without your cart full of bright and fresh
colors.
Choose whole grain foods, like brown rice and whole wheat pasta. They're packed with
fiber, which is important for maintaining a healthy weight and supports healthy blood
glucose levels .
Get your protein from fish and lean meats like chicken or turkey. If you’ve got red
meat in mind, choose cuts that end in the word “loin”, like sirloin, since they’ve
got less saturated fat. That goes for pork loin too! And don’t forget to also get some
extra protein from non-meat sources like dried beans, lentils and tofu.
Skip the sugary drinks altogether….like soda, fruit punch, and sweet tea. Instead,
opt for thirst-quenching water or if you must, zero-calorie diet drinks.
