My research interest is functional food, food that offers health benefits in addition to the nutrition it provides
The role of this functional food in reducing risk factors for cardiovascular disease, lowering blood glucose lowering
cholesterol, lowering body weight, thats what we do. Our studies are funded by the National Mango Board and the first
study we did is an animal study where we fed mice a high fat diet and give them 2 doses of mango, 1% and 10% and we give
another group the drug Roceglypasone a diabetic drug and we find that 1% mango is comparable to the drug in terms of
lowering blood glucose and moderating body fat in mice fed high fat diet. We're now conducting a human study. We will
give obese people freeze dried mango, 10 grams per day, and then measure their body composition. We have another study
We will do with pre-diabetics and supplement them with mango, like our animal study. Our nutritional studies are
beneficial to humans because of problems with obesity and cardiovascular disease. Obesity is such a big problem in the US
Our research hopefully, by giving simple changes in your lifestyle such as eating a little mango will help reduce those
risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
