Hey guys, Hyrum Lai here with Purveyors of Awesome. If you're like me, I'm always looking
for the best protein bar to get a quick hit of protein without having to take out my blender
and make a big production. I've tried a good number of protein bars and I know that not
only is taste a really high factor, but you want to make sure that you're getting the
highest quality protein in a tasty little package. Is it doable? You bet it is. However,
a big problem is that food manufacturers can make anything taste good. They've really mastered
the art of polishing a ***. That's right, I said it, A ***. So just because the packaging
is stating "high protein" and it tastes good, doesn't mean that it's actually good for you.
I'm going to show you 3 different protein bars that I've tried, and there's only one
that is the best protein bar for building muscle and losing fat.
Let's start with the Clif Builder's Bar in Chocolate.
We all know the Clif brand and their regular energy bars are pretty tasty. This Builders
bar is no exception. This chocolate bar has 20 g protein and 270 calories. It has a total
of 20 ingredients not including the vitamins and minerals. Which is not too bad for a protein
bar, however the biggest issue I have is that if you're looking to build muscle and lose
fat, the soy protein used in the Clif's Builder Bar just won't cut it. A Harvard research
study found that men with high intakes of soy foods had poorer *** quality. This may
be linked to soy's estrogenic activity. Bottom line, as tasty as it is, avoid soy as a protein
source and stick with whey.
Now on to Promax Cookies n' Cream. I used to eat these bars like they were going
out of style. The bars taste great with all of the little cookie bits and yogurt coating.
Awesome, right! With 31 ingredients not including the vitamin and minerals, these bars have
20 g protein and 270 calories with a mix of soy and whey protein. Here's the kicker. This
bar comes in at 40g of sugar. That's more than a Snickers bar. No wonder these bars
tasted so freakin good. Again, if your goal is to build muscle and lose fat, sugar is
your enemy.
Last but not least, Quest Protein Bars I just starting eating these and I'm a big
fan. The bars have 20 g of whey and milk protein isolate. No soy. The bars have between 170-210
calories and 10 -12 ingredients, depending on the flavor you get. Quest has a ton of
flavor choices, but to be honest not all of them are super tasty. The best flavors to
me are the Coconut Cashew, Chocolate Brownie, Peanut Butter & Jelly, and Cookie Dough. One
great thing about the Quest protein bars is that they aren't coated with a chocolate or
yogurt layer. This means that you won't have a big mess on your hands if you should leave
your protein bar in your gym bag, in the car, on a hot day.
There is a small downside to the Quest Protein Bars. The sodium is a bit high with 340mg.
IF you're staying within the recommended daily sodium intake of 1,500 - 2,000 mg per day,
then you'll have to be careful with this protein bar.
One quick tip, if you decide to try Quest bars, get the chocolate brownie bar and nuke
it in the microwave for 10 seconds. It'll taste like a fresh baked brownie right out
of the oven. Who needs a cheat day with these little tasty morsels?
So there you have it. Not all protein bars are created equal, however the Quest Protein
Bars rise to the top to help you achieve your fitness goals. Will only eating these bars
make you stronger and leaner? Of course not, so get out and get to work.
