Hi. My name is Caitlin Cherry. I'm the ninth artist in Brooklyn Museum's Raw/Cooked series.
My upcoming exhibition, titled Hero Safe, is located in the fourth floor contemporary
galleries and also in the lobby under the brick arcade. It consists of three paintings
and three sculptures that are based off of Leonardo da Vinci's war machines.
They'll be set to appear to be launching those paintings. The war machines were all constructed
in Hudson, New York, by my friend Ian Warren. My paintings usually start with a maquette.
I use that to paint from live. I first start with an acrylic underpainting, and then paint
over that with oil. For a while, I've been working with this golem figure who is always
constructed out of clay. I place them in different environments. They become the main character
of the majority of my paintings. For me, as an artist, I can employ them to comment on
different points in history. There are two installations in the fourth floor contemporary
galleries that are facing towards this grand chandelier overlooking the BeauxArts Court.I
decided to choose that location because that chandelier represents the heart of this museum,
and to have the catapult appear to be launching towards that is kind of a representation of
bringing art towards the center of an arts community. The reason why I chose Leonardo
da Vinci to hone in on with this exhibition is because I'm really inspired by the way
he moved through his life as a man of multiple trades. He was a very accomplished painter,
but he also was an inventor and an engineer. At the same time as he was making beautiful
creations, he was also conceptualizing war machines. I was really attracted to his biography
in that sense.
