Hi, my name is Bob Butt, aka Rosebud. I invented the Long Island Iced Tea.
This guy is historical. This is the man right here. The Long Island Iced Tea!
The Iced Tea was invented at the OBI East in Hampton Bays back in the 70s. Life was
good in the Hamptons. It was beautiful. Summertime. Bands played in this place. It was, uh, it
was just a really wonderful place.
We had a contest at the bar that I was working, the OBI, and they put a bottle of triple sec
on the bar and they, uh, asked us to make something out of it. So twenty other bartenders
and myself, we, you know, we went to work and, uh, I came up with this drink.
We started out with a little *** in the glass, a shot.
We started out with some gin in the glass, about a shot.
Rum. About a shot.
Tequila. It was everything white at the bartender's station.
Some triple sec, a shot.
A little bit of sour mix.
And a little Coke just to make the color.
And there we have a Long Island Iced Tea.
It just spread from there. Just, uh, all of a sudden, five years later every place you
went had Long Island Iced Tea.
Two weeks ago I'm sitting at the bar across the street here at Boston's On The Beach.
Right out here in the Tiki Bar.
And my friend told this girl next to him...
He's the one who invented the Long Island Iced Tea.
She stood up and she said, "Hey. Hey."
Pointing at him and swearing.
"You mother-"
"You wrecked my car."
"You got me in more trouble!"
And then eventually she went around the other side of the bar and they became good friends.
I never really thought about the money making aspect of it. I invented it for fun. It was
part of my job and I, you know, I think I always did my job well, and this says I did
my job well at the time. You know, I think I did my job well. This is a good one.
This is a real good drink.
