Moodle 2.5 has brought a Responsive Design theme into the core of Moodle. Responsive
design optimizes your website for different device types. So instead of making separate
themes and layouts for separate screen sizes and devices, you use one theme and it "responds"
to the device type of the user. The website adapts the layout to the viewing environment
Testing to see if a webpage design is responsive is easy: by adjusting the width of your browser,
the layout "will respond" to the dimensions. When it gets narrow enough - like the screen
width of your phone - the layout will adjust automatically.
Moodle Responsive Design moves the blocks to the bottom of your course. This keeps the
main course content at the top of the screen space, and moves the additional functionality
to the bottom. Moodle 2.5 comes with a responsive design
theme called "Clean." To change your theme, look under the Site Administration Block.
Under Appearance, Look for Theme, and then Theme Selector.
When using responsive design, you only need to select one theme. It will respond to different
devices, so you no longer need to set the theme for other device types. The default responsive
theme for Moodle is called "Clean." Let's see how the Clean theme looks on different
devices. Holding an iPad vertically, the course contents
are at the top of the page. The blocks for the course go to the bottom. But holding an
iPad horizontally, there is enough space, so the blocks stay at the top, just as you
would see it on a computer. When using your phone, you have even less
screen space. Regardless which way you hold your phone, the course content stays at the top,
and the blocks move to the bottom. This concludes our overview of Responsive
Design and Moodle. If you need assistance theming, branding, and making use of responsive
design for your Moodle site, please contact at Lambda Solutions. We would be happy to help.
