Should I learn HTML before HTML5?
HTML is the basic programming language for creating webpages.
But should I learn it before learning HTML5?
It isn't an either/or proposition. HTML5 is the latest active version of the HTML language.
I've heard that I should learn HTML because it is more widely used.
Not all browsers support HTML5. If you want to work in web development, knowing HTML is
more useful.
HTML is the basic version, and it is more clunky.
It is like learning JavaScript before you learn jQuery. Get a strong foundation before
you learn the latest and greatest tricks.
I would think that I'd learn the basics like attributes and tags no matter which version
of HTML I learned.
The only caveat might be the Microsoft certification exams.
That's a heck of a caveat. If you can pass their exams, you're almost guaranteed an IT
job.
The Microsoft 70-480 exam has questions on HTML5, which you cannot answer if all you
know is HTML.
Then I need to learn HTML5.
HTML4 is easier to learn. Maybe you could start with that version before jumping into
the more advanced HTML 5.
That sounds like learning Windows XP before using Windows 7.
HTML5 has more bells and whistles than HTML4, but the concepts and code are the same in
each.
Then I'll go with HTML4 and start learning HTML5.
Oh, and start learning CSS.
Why would I need to know about cascade style sheets?
That's what lets you create mobile ready websites that resize based on the device the user is
on, and knowing HTML of any version without CSS means you can't get the jobs for creating
mobile websites or redesigning websites that work just as well on any device.
At least you didn't tell me to start studying Java, too.
Nah. PHP is more useful.
