Welcome to the Multimedia Impact Weather Briefing for Central Alabama. I'm Meteorologist Jim
Stefkovich and this briefing will focus on potential flooding Saturday night through
Sunday morning.
This past weekend, very heavy rain affected many areas of Alabama. This is a rainfall
map, and you can see many places south of Interstate 59 received between two and five
inches of rainfall, with some isolated higher amounts. This has left the ground very saturated.
On Saturday, low pressure will develop in the northern Gulf of Mexico with rain developing
well north and east of the center of this system. By Sunday morning, the low pressure
will move northeast into Georgia and the rain will begin to taper off across Alabama from
west to east.
As a result, widespread 1-2 inches of total rainfall is expected by early Sunday morning
for areas generally along and south of Interstate 59. However, as with the last system, there
could be isolated higher amounts of three inches or more. Although widespread flooding
is not anticipated, there could be isolated flooding problems, especially in urban areas,
as well as rises in rivers and lakes in central Alabama. Elsewhere in central Alabama, 0.5
to 1.5 inches of total rainfall is expected.
