Hi, I’m Emmanuelle Vaugier with PETA. For thousands of years, harp seals have migrated
each spring from Greenland down the east coast of Canada, where pregnant seals must stop
on the ice flows to give birth. Baby seal fur is very soft; but they won’t enjoy it
for long. The Canadian government permits hundreds of thousands of seal pups to be welcomed
into the world each spring by sealers with clubs and picks who beat the animals to death
so that they can steal that soft fur. The commercial seal slaughter is obviously, cruel
but it’s also an example of government waste. Canada spends more than seven million Canadian
dollars in taxpayer funds each year subsidizing this massacre. Millions more are spent propping
up this dying industry, even though income from the slaughter counts for less than one
percent of the economy of Newfoundland where the slaughter takes place. Still, each year,
sealers shoot or bludgeon baby seals, drag them across the ice with hooks, and then toss
their dead or dying bodies onto heaps. As you can see, many seals don’t die right
away and frequently suffer long, drawn-out deaths. Almost all these seals and skinned
and killed when they are only about three months old or even younger, and it’s often
in front of other terrified seals. Millions of people became aware of this cruelty, and
seal fur was banned in the U.S., Russia, and Europe. So the Canadian government has been
desperately trying to peddle seal products in China, but with little success. Your voice
counts. Please help us convince the Canadian government to listen to the worldwide outcry
and permanently halt the seal slaughter. Visit Peta.org to learn how you can help. Thank
you.
