Hey there -- meet Joe. He's a SaskPower customer who's wondering why his power bill is so much.
As far as he's concerned, he barely uses the stuff.
The thing is, electricity powers so many things. We use it constantly, sometimes without even
knowing it. That coffee pot that brews your morning cup - yeah, that takes power. Oh,
and the laptop you work on throughout the day, that does too. And don't forget about
the cell phone you can't live without or the nightlight that keeps your kids feeling safe
after you tuck them in. I know you can't actually see it, but we all use power to get through
the day.
At SaskPower, it's our job to get electricity to you. But it takes a lot of systems and
people just to flick on a light switch. Power stations, switching stations, and substations,
Lines to move power around the province and lines to get it to your house. And don't forget
the proud SaskPower employees keeping the power flowing-- in all the crazy Saskatchewan
weather .
But just like everything else, our stuff is getting old. A lot of it has been around for
at least three decades. Just imagine if other things in your life were that old. That would
be like driving around this car, still typing on this computer or still talking on this
cell phone. The world is upgrading and so are we.
We're working to replace power poles and updating power stations since some of the units are
more than 50 years old. And, let's not forget -- there are more people and industry in Saskatchewan
than ever before who need more electricity to power their lives.
We get it - paying a bill is never fun -- after all, we're customers too. But thirty-eight
per cent of unplanned outages in this province are due to the condition of our electrical
system. Remember all that old stuff we mentioned? Your power bill helps pay to replace it so
outages like this don't happen as often.
In the end, for average Saskatchewan people like Joe, electricity accounts for about two
per cent of a family's total spending. So the majority of your money is going toward
things you love - like your car, your house, food and fun. Your SaskPower bill is a small
price to pay to power your life.
