http://www.elementsofmemory.com Have you ever had a moment where you couldn't think of the
word you were trying to use? Usually you can look it up or have the person you’re with
guess it, but what if this happens to you with increasing frequency? Should you be worried?
If you find you are having trouble remembering words to use and are forgetting other little
things in your life, you may need to sit down and assess what’s going on.
Usually sporadic short-term memory loss isn't serious, but it is possible that these are
symptoms of a larger health issue that’s developing.
For most people the single biggest cause of memory loss is stress. Much of the stress
is self-induced such as hectic schedules, over spending, too much work, etcetera. If
this sounds like you, it’s time to make some firm life decisions.
There’s one vital word you may forget every day: “no.” When you are tempted to volunteer
for school, the soccer team, or the neighborhood, it may be best to bide your conscience and
give at least a temporary no.
By keeping your level of activities to a manageable level you can keep your stress down and your
short term memory operating efficiently.
Getting the appropriate amount of sleep is perhaps the single biggest factor of short
term memory loss in otherwise healthy people.
Studies have shown most people need between 6 and 8 hours per night of quality sleep,
and adults are not able to catch up on sleep by getting extra hours on weekends.
It may be tough, but you have to fit in 6-8 hours nightly. If problems persist, see your
doctor, as you could have a condition like sleep apnea, or another developing mental
condition.
Another way to keep better track of words is to make time to read regularly. When you
come across new words, write them down and look them up, and you can start working to
expand your vocabulary.
Whatever you have to do, keep healthy and keep a hold of those words before they get
away from you!
