Welcome to the second video in my Star Wars: The Old Republic
tutorial series. In this video I'm going to cover the basic controls
utility skills, interface customization, and map navigation.
Where we left off last time, we had just picked up a new quest
We were actually in this room right here and picked up a quest called Attack of the Flesh Raiders.
If you look in the upper right corner of your screen you'll see the quest log
This is where all of your quests that you are tracking will show up.
So the name of our current quest is Attack of the Flesh Raiders
and our current task in that quest or mission... thing is to take
a speeder to the Gnarls.
So this is how you'll find your speeder to the Gnarls.
You can press "M" to open your map or you can click on this icon
in your mini-map.
So here's a map of the area that we're in. The area is called the Master's Retreat
This is where we are, and we're facing that way.
If you look on the map there are not a whole lot of icons here
there's really only one so it's kind of a big clue about where we're going.
But here's WHY you want to go there. You want to go there because it's green.
Most mission objectives are going to be highlighted in green.
If you look on your map over here you can kind of see a legend
And you can see that mission objectives are generally going to be highlighted in some way
with green. Either an exit or a mission objective there or in this case, a taxi.
that's useful for our mission is highlighted in green. You can see
here that the icon for a taxi is that.
The map has a bunch of different features that I'll go over some other time.
For now we need to make our way to this speeder and take it to the Gnarls for our mission.
I do want to mention, the user interface right now is not your standard interface that you will see in your game
when you first open it up. There are two bars on either side and one
beneath here. That's usually one of the first things I change about my game when I log in.
I set it so that I have a lot of quickslots. You can do this by pressing
"ESC" and selecting Interface Editor.
This will let you change any aspect of your user interface however you want it.
There are several presets.
To load a preset, click on this dropdown. The one that I use is called Extended Quickbars.
and then you click the load icon next to it.
This will set up your default user interface. Press the x to get out of there.
Now your screen should look something like this.
Here are some basic controls. The controls in Star Wars: The Old Republic are pretty similar to other games.
... to other MMO games.
... to other MMO games. The "W" is going to move you forward.
The "W" is going to move you forward. The "S" is going to move you backward.
"A" is going to rotate your character to the left and "D" is going to rotate your character to the right.
So lets move around here and see what we can see.
So this is the planet Tython where both the Jedi Knight and the Jedi Consular will start off their story.
It's kind of interesting to check out the website http://starwars.wikia.com to read some of the back-story to it.
but this game will also expose you to some of the lore.
Alright so, using our new navigation skills lets move forward here.
You can also, if you don't like using the keyboard so much, hold down the right mouse button
and hold down "W" and you'll move in whatever direction your character is looking
I'm not sure who this person is that's following me around...
If we press "M" where our surroundings are. We're here, we need to move over there
but before we do that I'd like to take a few seconds here to discuss the abilities that we've been given.
Down here on the ability bar you'll see that there are... these are all the abilities that are granted to a new Jedi Knight
The first two are combat abilities. I'll discuss those in more depth when we go on to a combat tutorial.
These two are toggled abilities.
A toggled ability is an ability that will only apply its affects to your character when it's turned on.
and will last until you turn it off.
You can spot a toggled ability by looking at the bottom of its icon and seeing if there's a black rectangle there
The next ability is called Force Might it's a "buff".
For those who don't know, the term buff is used a lot in MMOs to reflect an ability that sticks around for a while and grants benefits to you or to allies.
This one is called Quick Travel, it's used for moving between locations.
Right now it's grayed out because we don't know any locations on this planet, we'll have to discover them first.
I'll go over that later as well.
This last ability is called Introspection and it's what's known as an out of combat heal.
If you are in a fight and you take some damage you'll want to heal up before your next fight
So you just hit this ability and you'll start healing.
Now Most of these abilities, every character will have
The only exception is the ***-Cho form.
I'm not sure if that's how you really pronounce it
but that's how I'm going to say it
This ability is unique to the Jedi Knight and is one of the features of their class
Sprint is available to everybody at first level, it used to be available only at level 14 or 15... somewhere around there
now everybody has access to it.
Force Might is unique to the Jedi Knight but each class has its own different buff.
Quick Travel, as I said is granted to everybody
Introspection, everybody has a version of it.
I'm going to show you how I organize my abilities
Generally these toggled abilities I will leave on.
If you have a question about what an ability does, hover over it,
and take a look in the lower right corner of your screen
You'll see the name of it, its cooldown, and a descritpion
For instance the ***-Cho form, basically increases the damage that I deal to enemies and redusces the damage I take from enemies
So I leave that on. I usually put my toggled abilities up in this corner
because I don't need to monitor them or anything. I just turn them on and essentially forget about them.
Sprint: Sprint increases my movement speed when I'm not in combat.
If I get in a fight, I'll slow down a little bit, but as soon as I'm out of the fight I'll pick up speed again
Another great ability to leave on
Force Might, the buff, I usually hit. If you look at the description it says that
it will increase the damage of myself and my allies by 5% for 60 minutes.
So every 60 minutes I'm going to have to reapply it.
Now I don't have to count this in my head. If you look above my name
you'll see all the effects that are currently affecting my character
You can see the ***-Cho form, the Sprint, and Force Might
which is the buff that I just applied to myself.
You'll also see a timer counting down from 60 minutes
Once that expires, I'll have to reapply. But it will let me know how far gone that is
Quick Travel, I usually put my movement abilities, my teleports, my mounts, in this corner here.
Another thing that I'm not going to be using all the time. Introspection I keep pretty handy
because I'll probably use it after fights at a higher level
This clears out my combat bar here.
These abilities can be used by either clicking on them or by pressing the number in the corner of the box
that the ability is in, but I'll go over abilities in more detail once we learn a few new ones.
For now, let's head back toward our mission objective.
Again opening the map to see where we are, which direction we're pointing and which direction we have to go to get to our objective.
You'll know you are getting close to an objective when it shows up in your mini-map over here
Alright folks, I have to really apologize. Something really embarrassing just happened
I recorded a whole episode and the last few minutes of it weren't
captured because I filled up a hard drive.
So here's the ending that you should have gotten
Unfortunately now my quest log is updated with where we stopped instead of where we started
but through the magic of video editing I'll at least show you
what happens when your quest log updates
So, anyways, where we left off, I was heading down this ramp
to show you where we were going.
Alright, up ahead you can see our target.
It's showed up on our mini-map and it's highlighted in green and it's got the taxi icon.
You can see that this NPC ahead, or Non-Player Character
has a taxi icon over their head so that's the person we're looking for
or the droid we are looking for...
As we approach... if we're too far away from this guy to talk to him
the icon will be grayed out, but as we get closer the icon will fill with yellow indicating that we can talk to him
So right-click to speak with the droid and he'll bring up the
taxi interface.
On the taxi interface you can see where we are.. right here
and all the locations that are linked to it.
Right now there's only one.
If we hover over it says the name of the taxi we're headed to
underneath that it lists any quests that are at this location
as you can see Attack of the Flesh Raiders, our current quest,
is listed at that location so that is definitely where we want to go
You can also tell that it's definitely where we want to go because it's highlighted in green.
You can also tell that it's definitely where we want to go because it's highlighted in green.
Next to the name of the Gnarls Outpost Speeder here you'll see a weird symbol and a zero
That is the cost of using this taxi.
That is the cost of using this taxi.
This one is free.
We'll click on that... And they'll lend us this magical speeder
which magically appears out of nowhere and then when we arrive
at our destination it will disappear. At higher levels we'll get a certain form of speeder that we can use on our own and take it wherever we want
Hopping off... and there goes our speeder.
At this point, you'd normally notice that your quest log updates
and instead of saying that we need to take the speeder to the Gnarls it now says that we need to "Defeat Flesh Raiders: 0/10"
[No audio] This is what it looks like when the quest log updates.
Our new objective is to go out there and kill Flesh Raiders, wherever they are.
Now I know I said in my last video that this game doesn't usually tell you to go somewhere and kill 10 of something and then come back
Well, at least this one doesn't have us coming back...
It just has us going out there and killing 10 Flesh Raiders. It also did, you know, wrap a little bit of story around it.
I wasn't completely wrong... just mostly wrong
this is where I'm going to leave this video for today. In our next video I'm going to show you the basics of the quest system
How to find quests, how to complete them, and how to turn them in.
Thanks for joining me on this one, and I hope you'll join me for the next!
