My name is Kutiman.
I’m thirty years old, I’m a musician.
I just love to learn how to play new instruments.
I started to search for tutorials on how to play different instruments.
One day I was looking for a funk drum tutorial
and I ran into this amazing drummer that plays this groove
and explains at the same time how to play it.
"... especially with my fingers, playing the backbeat."
You can learn anything you want on YouTube.
"... how to peel the onion without crying."
"... how to drill into your wall."
"... how to change the light bulbs."
I really wanted to play with him, because he played this amazing groove.
I decided to record guitar on top of the video.
And then the bass,
trumpet,
guitar.
I really liked it. And I said, wait a minute,
maybe I can find a bass player on YouTube,
to match with the drums.
I said, if I can find a bass player, I can find a guitar player and then piano,
saxophone.
Whatever I want.
Time has to be precise in music.
I always start my tracks from drums.
I say, when the drums are good, the rest is just a piece of cake.
Very fast, from searching samples it became searching people.
It’s not just a guitar sample, it’s a person.
I felt connected to these people.
So I’m here in my studio in Tel Aviv
and I’m conducting an orchestra from Australia, Japan, France, Egypt.
From all over the world.
I just sent the video to YouTube.
I refresh the page and I see 8,000 views.
And I refresh the page and I see 15,000.
I go to eat something and it’s 80,000.
After a week it was more than a million views.
All the Internet was talking about this project.
One day I’m sitting in my house just watching YouTube movies,
and the next day I get a call in the morning from the BBC
and an hour later from the CNN and from Time Magazine.
It’s crazy.
I got so much good feedback and great comments from people
that are taking part in it, that they’re so excited and so happy.
The mother of one of the musicians from the "ThruYOU" project
wrote me a thank-you-letter, that she’s so proud of her son,
thank you for taking his video for this project.
It was really touching.
Basically, anyone can do it.
You just need a computer and an Internet connection and time.
Time is precious and you have to make the most out of it.
