It strikes me every day when I'm driving to work how beautiful it is up here. I'm working
in the oil and gas industry. We take these jobs for a lot of reasons, but for me it's
for opportunity for my family. That's why I'm up here.
The decision to come work away from home was a bit of a tough one. She has experience with
that, having her father having worked away from home for a lot of her life, so she's
used to that. For me it was a little more difficult to wrap my head around it.
I miss the 'good mornings'. I miss the bed times. I don't know how her father could have
done it, being away from home for so long and can't talk to anybody. I'm lucky. Every
day I can phone my kids. I can see them on the phone every day. Thomas is a typical boy
in that he loves cars and trucks and I try and show him pictures. I take video and show
him. And you can hear him in the background, his little mind is just exploding. "Look at
that truck! Oh, look at that truck!" So, watching him experience and see things through what
I've seen up here, it's fun to watch.
I've got a 6-month old. He recognizes me on the phone. He'll grab for the phone. He knows
I'm not there. So, for him to comprehend, "Hey, that's dad." And has a smile on his
face, the whole thing—that makes me happy. The service that TELUS provides up here allows
me to be able to connect with my family. Not just through the phone but actually connect
eye-to-eye, make eye contact, read body language, and knowing that it's not going to drop the
call. I don't have to hunt for that spot, "Oh, hang on, I got to stand over here." No,
it's not like that. It's, you know, I've got connectivity up here. It makes a difference for me.
It makes it easy.
