In this lesson we’re going to introduce you to the main interface of KillerKeys, the
Master Palette. The Master Palette contains all shortcut keys,
which are organized into groups. We’re going to start with the top of the
interface and work our way down, and first we have the area that displays the active
application. As you navigate between applications, KillerKeys automatically detects the active
application and displays the proper shortcuts. Here we’ve switched to a Word document and
back to the desktop which is Windows 7. To the right of the active application is
the status text area, which shows you the total number of shortcuts available for the
active application as well as indicating if there are any hidden or filtered shortcuts.
Moving to the right is the minimize to notifications icon and maximize restore down icons. Please
refer to the lesson Showing & Hiding Shortcuts and the Master Palette for more information
on this feature. Just below are four icons. The Group Hide
icon allows you to hide entire groups of keys from view; with the Filter icon you can filter
keys by direct keystroke or modifier. The Favorites icon allows you create Favorite
groups into which you can drag keys from any group. Last is the Setting icon that opens
the Settings window. The Search window allows you to search for
shortcuts by keyword or a fragment of a keyword. When you do a search, both the short description
– what is displayed on the shortcut key – and the long description are searched.
Using the expansion icon allows you to select searching by a keystroke: simply press the
keystroke and the resulting shortcut will be displayed.
The main section of the Master Palette contains the groups. Clicking on the expansion icon
shows the keys displayed within each group. Clicking the color box allows you to change
the color of the keys within the group. Notice how each group has its own status text,
similar to the status text at the top of the Master Palette. Here it is specific to each
group, showing how many keys are in each group and if any are hidden. Clicking on the Edit
allows you to hide or show keys with the group. Notice how the status text is now updated,
indicating that two keys are now hidden. The order of the groups can also be changed
to fit your needs by simply dragging and dropping a group within the Master Palette.
At the bottom of the Master Palette are Profiles, which can be used both for working with various
modes of an application as well as for accommodating multiple users. Please refer to the lesson
Profiles for more information on this feature. The bottom right portion of the Master Palette
interface has the resize triangle allowing you to size the Master Palette to you needs.
