My name is Ber Rowan, I'm an employment officer
with KARE in Kildare Town
We got involved with Job Shadow Initiative
as we are members of the IASE, through information
I received and through attending a number of meetings.
Employer's were very positive and excited to
get involved, because we had prepared information for them and with the help of the IASE
and the support we got from them, we were very
confident in selling this idea to them.
And also the fact that we assured them that
there was no demands to get paid employment
from them at this stage.
I feel it was a great incentive for some of our
service users, because there was no pressure for
them to make a decision regarding their
career at this stage.
Also we brought it as a fun thing, that it was going
to be any area that they wanted to pick,
where they would shadow somebody, but any
demands wouldn't be placed on them to
perform at a certain level or to accept
a job if it was offered to them.
So I feel it gave them a full insight into
what's out there for them. It's given them a great
boost of confidence because they succeeded
in it and they came out with new ideas and
things that they were saying they wanted to try the next time.
The success has been that they now have ideas
to change career paths and try something.
And the success for the employer is that both have
been very positive and invited us back.
So I feel that's a long term plan, more so than
an initial success.
I hope that I will be able to contact more
employer's next year and that we will
facilitate more service users going out.
And maybe the service users that initially had
no idea as to what they wanted to try
or had no idea about employment at all.
As there is no pressure going to be placed on
them to accept any jobs
or for employer's to give jobs.
I would hope that more people would be involved next year
