I'm buying potatoes.
Those had been at a dollar fifty cents
and now they've gone three times as high.
And just a few months ago like four months ago,
I could get them for a dollar fifty cents.
Now they're over three dollars.
What about tomatoes? Are you buying tomatoes today? Yes.
I cannot buy as much as I used to. I'm getting
three times less than what I got six months ago, because the prices have tripled - more than tripled.
This is passion fruit.
I would get twenty of these, but now I can only get eight for thirty-five cents.
About six months ago, I would get this for thirty-five cents.
Thirty-five cents - But now?
Now - it's a dollar fifty cents.
If we did that in America, and they're two dollars,
we'd be paying eight to ten dollars for these.
That's crazy.
So, it's three times as high.
We got that for eighty cents before.
Now this is all I get for eighty cents.
So it used to be that much for eighty cents and now it's this much.
For my family, I'm feeding eighteen now.
How many's that?
I'm feeding eighhteen. - Eighteen people.
In my family.
If that's happening to me, imagine the kids.
Think of Martin, who six months ago said there's no food at home, there's no breakfast at home, there's no tea -
there's nothing and the prices have now tripled.
That means that he can't have anything any more.
-So he only gets fed at the school? -Oh yes.
He's happy at the boarding school, because there he has three meals. But it's still posho and beans,
and the portions are smaller, because
the prices are effecting the schools. So the schools have to reduce the portions
if they are to maintain the school fees.
Other than that they have to triple the school fees, which the parents can't do.
So the parents can't survive, the kids can't be kept in school.
So what happens is to reduce the portions of food,
so the kids are eating less.
And that definitely effects their performance, if they are not eating enough.
I'll take two hours shopping because I have to go to different spots in the market to pick what I want,
and I shop from specific people. Usually people that I have developed a friendship with,
so they are good to me and I'll get good stuff. I can bargain -
How often do you make that trek?
When I can afford it.
