When someone is diagnosed with prediabetes it means that their blood sugar or glucose
is a little bit elevated but not high enough to meet the definition of diabetes. Prediabetes
does increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, but it’s important to recognize
that not everyone with this condition will go on to get diabetes. In fact there are many
things people can do to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes, and, in fact, even reverse
the process if they have been caught in this early stage. So it’s an important opportunity
for people to take steps to improve their health.
Research from large studies has shown that for prediabetes making lifestyle changes such
as improving their physical activity and diet can dramatically reduce their risk of going
on to develop diabetes by about 60%. In fact, research has shown that modest weight loss
of about 10% can delay the onset of diabetes. Prediabetes doesn’t just increase the risk
of diabetes but is also a marker for other issues. So making lifestyle changes can have
much wide reaching effects than just reducing one’s risk of diabetes. It can also improve
blood pressure, cholesterol, and also reduce the risk of heart attack by improving your
overall metabolic health.
