(Hammering and talking in background)
The shelter was
damaged severely in 2006
and there was some efforts to try and restore it, but they didn't go anywhere.
And finally last year,
I approached the monument and Diana Perez,
and said I was interested.
So, I contacted a bunch of retirees
and a retired Yacolt school teacher,
Mark Miller, was our craftsman.
I had a group of 12.
We always have had
at least five. (Talking and Hammering in background)
The shelter became the vehicle
so that we could reconnect again, and it's all about people.
I would come out here every day if I could be with these people.
They're great folks. We've had a good time reconnecting.
Depending upon what the Forest Service wants to do we'll probably
come back again next year to do some trail work, if that is OK,
and see if we can make an agreement
with the Forest Service do that.
That's why we did it.
It's a love of the forest.
And I hope more people can do that as well.
I think it's pretty cool!
When we got out here this shelter was just about knocked down completely.
All the sills on the bottom were on not underneath it.
So just in that first couple days just with leverage
no pulleys or anything like that just with leverage
we lifted up the shelter and got the sills back underneath it.
I was amazed that people could do that.
I was looking at it like this ain't going to happen.
I was to the point where I thought, oh maybe
we can't do this. They had it the whole time, and once we got it up
and we got all the posts underneath it, I was amazed that happened.
So I learned a bunch, and
I know Luke from the Institute was like a sponge too,
just learning a whole lot of different things. So it was great.
This started way back last year
when Phil came to us and we have just been coordinating with them
the logistics on getting tools in an out, materials in and out,
created ,along with or service as well, to make sure we
could get this all fixed up by the end of the summer.
They bring a lot of skill that we don't have in our generation with tools we don't use any more,
so that based with their their personalities and sense of humor,
their knowledge and stories it's been really fun coming out here.
It's different than any other project that we've really been really been working on.
It's been cool!
They got a... four different names they're working on?
So, what is OGBSs which is
Old Guys... (laughter).
Uh, its censored (laughter) you'll have to get that from Papa Dodd.
We've got to Christian this baby.
Ah that's right!
Get ready for a speech... and welcome our leadership team.
We're rededicating this shelter to the people.
***! (laughter)
That was awesome!
From the efforts of a few for the enjoyment of many...
That's what we want to do.
