>> Matt Wolken: Hi, I’m Matt Wolken.
I’m the General Manager for the Information Management products here at Dell Software.
These are the products which enable a company
to manage their data, manipulate their data
and gain insights from their data.

Every day we learn about a new company who has taken these novel technologies
and applied them in some new way
to achieve understanding of the business,
the consumer
or an opportunity for revenue that was never achieved before.
Previously IT was only about cost.
All we do is we’re a cost center and all we do is burden somebody else.
Now you have the opportunity to find revenue
and contribute to the revenue side of the house,
which is always better.

There is a term they call the data scientist.
This is generally a person who is multi-dimensional,
poly-math capable;
who takes a little bit of the domain of business,
a little bit of the domain of IT
and a little bit of the domain of math or analytics
and combines that together for an insight in a way that nobody else has before.
There is quite a skills gap in a few specific areas
that are really dramatic.
One of those is around data,
data scientist and being able to manipulate and
otherwise utilize big data or unstructured data.
In that area in particular, there is an outstrip demand for these people.
The salaries are increasing
and there’s not that many people –
not even that many people in the university system
to supply the current need for the next year or two.

Online education is great.
I think there are many aspects of that today that are enabling
not only people in our local environment in the United States,
but around the world in a way that has just never been seen before.
One of the key prizes I think to the advancement of both culture
and an overall civilization
or economy is education.
Learning more,
knowing more and being able to do that
is a fantastic way to go.
