Once again, welcome to ITSE 1345, today in this part we're going to talk about Competency
1. Competency 1 deals with the orientation for this class. Those of yo who have had 2309
probably have done most of the heavy work, those of you who are new to this process,
well, I'll kind of lead into it. If you're on campus you'll have the campus resources
that labs and all that, when yo are away from the campus you have to build a support mechanism
off campus. So what we're going to talk about in this part this orientation is the element
that you have to go through to develop the support mechanism off campus. You have to
use the Oracle website and download Oracle 11g, now there are two events, there's a 32
level event and a 64 level event, depending on the hardware you have to support this.
The 32 level event is called Express, and this is called standard edition. So the 64
event is called Standard Edition and the 32, I'm sorry the 32 bit is called Express. Now
the 32 bit is more user friendly cause Oracle has thrown more resources at it and its easier
to use, the 64 level event the Standard is not that friendly and in order to do this
you have to develop SQL Developer to support it. So those are the two things you have to
download. Now once you have done this you have to build the databases that will be used
to support the class work. Now there's actually two events there's a
text book event that you have to do and there's a lab event that you have to do. This is called
"Brewbean", it' s coffee thing, and this is called "Orders." Now this is used to do the
end of chapter review , and there' also an end of chapter called hands on. Now, the textbook
event, you read the chapter and you do the review, you read the chapter and you do the
hands on. Now the one thing is after you read the chapter after you submit the work, I will
give you the solution. So you turn this in and then i will give you the solution. I give
you the solution so that way you do your work you get your solution and then you go back
and resubmit the work. So that way you can kinda get to right. On the order side you
also have to create the database, now this is
the one you turn in, this is where you learn how to do things and then this is how you
hand it in, this is the actual assignment. Now, uh, understand that this class is in
two parts, there's the textbook portion and the lab portion. This is more intense on the
lab side, I will tell you that the labs are intensive, they're not hard but they are very
very time intensive. I would recommend that, if history is the teacher based on what other
students have done, yo know 15 hours for each of these labs. So you have 15 hours that I
would dedicate, now that is after, this is after you've done this work over here. Because
this work will give you the resources you need to do this. If you think you'r good enough
you can take the shortcut but I guarantee you if you do not do the research, this is
coving to take you 60 hours, cause you're going to have to go back and do this, I guarantee
it! So please follow the text book to learn how to do things and then go back and do the
labs. it is very, it's a very easy progression. One of the things that you have to struggle
with as you do this 32 bit and 64 bit world technology is always advancing, um, Oracle
is one of those, some people say is not user friendly, some people say its very user friendly,
my recommendation is if you're going to download Oracle onto a PC, make sure that the PC is
something that you can do with out for awhile, because if you are load ing this program and
it has a hiccup, there have been scenarios where the only solution was to do a full level
format and reinstall everything. So make sure that if you are going to be using Oracle that
you have pall the resources, the disks that come with it. be very patient with it as you're
downloading Oracle I would recommend that you do a screen print for everything you're
doing. As you see something before you hit the next button for the next thing to do,
get a screen shot. and then do some text marks on it. Write down what the heck is going on,
because I guarantee you as you're going through this if you miss a step it is very very helpful
to have a screen print event, so you can go back and figure out. The greatest mistake
people make is not keeping track of the passwords they are using when they do this. If you forget
a password, if you forget an event, you have to reinstall because there ain't no way you
can recover a password. Now on the 32 Express Oracle does have some features where you effectively
register this with Oracle and they will help you keep track of some of the databases, some
of the passwords that support 32 Express. If you do the 64 event you're on your own,
if you screw up effectively you have to go back and uninstall and re-install. Now depending
on some of the default parameters that are native to your PC, sometimes when you install
the system will ask you would you like to, would you like for this to be auto start or
would you like to have a manual start? So as you install this understand that you are
providing instructions to the whole process and you have to remember some of the default
setting you already have on your machine because I have a lot of calls from students that say
I have installed but it's not going to work, well that's probably because you have default
settings that will, to be manage resources, will not automatically start this because
what start a program and run it in the background if you are not going to use it. Because its
burning up your CPU time sitting there cranking out. So many PC have the default setting where
you can install a program and use it but the only time it runs is when you start it. It
doesn't really run in the background, so understand that one of the things you have to do in the
installation mechanism is be very mindful of what happening as you're installing. Now
there are other products that you can get, of those of you that really want something,
there's something called modeler which is like an ER tool to help you do diagrams if
you like to do that. My suggestion is as you do this, being in an academic situation, and
there is an academic alliance between the college the publisher and Oracle. If you register
your ACC email address with Oracle there's this privilege that you can use their product
for educational purposes. Now when you register with Oracle if you use your personal email
address you may not have that umbrella coverage that gives you the ability to play with this
at leisure. So try to use your ACC email address when you are registering with Oracle to get
this, because that does give you an Academic Alliance privilege, coverage whatever you
want to call it, you get to use this for learning purposes.
So we now have the text book database, we have the lab database and you have SQL developer,
Standard Edition, and Express editionAnd this is how you will build a foundation for the
databases that will be conducted in ITSE1345, that concludes Competency 1.
