ORLIN VELEV: Nanofibers are a very, very valuable
nanomaterial. However, making nanofibers is not cheap.
Unfortunately, like many of the nanomaterials, the present
technologies for making nanofibers tend to be costly.
The focus of our work is scaling up the nanofiber fabrication by
a liquid-based process where we manage to synthesize large
quantities of nanofibers in a liquid – in a sheet medium,
where we can produce large quantities of nanofibers very
inexpensively from almost any polymer. We have found out that
our technology's scalable, which means that we can really produce
nanofibers in pounds or ton quantities, and this allows us,
really, to bring the nanofibers down in price, integrate our
technology with existing techniques for making filters,
soundproofing devices. So we really believe that we can make
difference in terms of cost and scalability when it comes to
nanofibers. And luckily, we found one metal for making
microrods, which were then modified for making nanofibers,
and this metal then forms the base of the technology that
we have behind Zanofy[ph]. So it was really this trial for
making scalable nanomaterial fabrication that eventually
lead to this technology.
