Well let’s jump into the program today. You know Bureau of Reclamation is very proud to be a part of Boulder City. Starting in the 30s,
we established a home here in Boulder City and then became a regional office in Boulder City since 1943.
We appreciate the community watching with interest as our Green Building has gone up.
We’ve had just great support from the neighbors, from the community providing us some input, from the state historic folks and
we really appreciate them. And Mayor, your folks have just been great; we appreciate all of the staff that you have working with you.
I’m very appreciative of the dedicated, smart, and passionate men and women of Reclamation.
We embarked on this project to provide high quality long term space, sustainable space.
And why would we do that? Because our people are our most important asset.
This project is the cornerstone of our master plan. And this space - the campus space up here - is really developing
and we're certainly proud of it. And I’d like to introduce Mike Connor, our Commissioner, who has been absolutely supportive
throughout this process, to say a few words; Mike.
Thank you, Lorri. I’d like to just extend also my greetings
on top of Lorri's greetings to all the dignitaries here today from the delegation,
Mayor Tobler, to all of you who have come back to see the opening of this building - Welcome!
We’re proud to be a long-time partner, resident, part of Boulder City and we’ll be here for the long term
now that we’ve got the sustainable building in place and everything else that’s going on.
Part of what’s made this possible for us was the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
We took overall out of the dollars that we got to invest in a whole lot of different projects and needs out West.
We took care of some of our own, including this building. This building uses state-of-the-art energy saving materials and fixtures
that would have already cut energy use and cost but we took it to the next level,
and built a solar farm on this campus that is providing over 245,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
With the added supplemental solar power this new Green Building
uses only 69 percent of the energy of a typical building of this size.
By generating our own power and using the latest in energy saving technology the building's operation actually
conserves the same amount of energy that would be used by 43 typical single-family homes in a year.
And it’s just not the energy saving aspects of it, it’s also the water conservation elements of the building.
It uses 39 percent less domestic water than a typical building; that’s 118,660 gallons of water conserved per year.
And by incorporating recycling technology into the operations of this building
we're recycling and reusing 83 percent of the water that is used in the cooling system and reclaiming it for irrigation and sanitary use.
That’s an additional 57,000 gallons of water that we don’t pull from area water supplies.
And on top of that we’re achieving a reduction of 419 tons per year in carbon dioxide greenhouse gas;
and that’s on top of an already aggressive regional recycling program that we have here based on Lorri's leadership
and those of the employees of the Lower Colorado Region;
so once again let’s give a round of applause for all those benefits they’ve worked in there.
And President Obama has a going green education initiative; and reach out to youth is part of the many youth programs
that the administration is promoting, so this is going to become an example to our youth to what the future looks like together;
were going to try and bring as many young people through here as possible and from that standpoint it’s part of our efforts
of being a good neighbor here in the community.
With that, once again thank you to Lorri, thanks for everybody being here;
I haven’t been through the completed building so I’m looking forward to the tour
as I hope all of you are, thank you.
I’d like to introduce you and have you say a couple of words, Mayor Roger Tobler.
Thank you..., and thank you for inviting me here today. I’m wearing a green shirt also but don’t come and ask me any questions,
although I did get to go through the building last week and
I learned a whole lot but I probably wouldn’t be able to help you out much.
But I wore the Boulder City green shirt because Boulder City, you know we refer to ourselves
as "Clean, Green Boulder City" and a project like this has a perfect fit in Boulder City.
And it’s really quite remarkable if you get a chance to go through there to see just all the efficiencies
that they were able to incorporate into this project.
You know talking about how this is just a good fit for Boulder City we look at ourselves and the country is starting to look at
Boulder City as a renewable energy leader with our solar energy park out in the Eldorado Valley.
And you look at the solar plant that’s back behind this building, we're going to be following your example here soon.
Once again were grateful for the partnership and just the model, the example that you’ve set now with this building
and putting the care and just the consideration into how it fits here in Boulder City, so thank you.
With that thanks everybody for coming, let’s go over and do the ribbon cutting.
This is a Certificate of Commendation presented to the Bureau of Reclamation, Commissioner Connor, in celebration
of the dedication of our new Platinum LEED Green Building,
congratulations.
Thank you very much, we never would have done it without Senator Reid’s support overall. Thank you.
