Hurricane Season is June 1st -- November 30th.
it's important for people to be prepared for any emergency situation particularly
for people with disabilities
i think the most important thing to people with disabilities can do to prepare
for any emergency is have a plan and more importantly have a plan
B then be and probably contingent plan C and by plan and what mean is
what you would have to do to evacuate your home, couldn't stay
where you are
either because of the actual disaster itself or because of the aftermath and
In Sandy, many people thought they could go to a relative's house across town
Plan B would be necessary when that relatives house is also flooded as well.
There are those individuals with disabilities who are
acutely impacted by the storm. Their homes flooded, their roof was
torn off
those types of things. but there's a whole other group
of folks that are secondarily impacted because
the individuals who support them are not able to get to them, or the
supports that they use in the community are not available to them. Sheltering and
Emergency service supports are
only for the emergency and only for sheltering, so people need to be keenly
aware of what they need to be able to articulate those needs to those
first responders who are helping them
A go bag is very individualized. It basically contains the supplies
that she would need if you had to evacuate in an emergency. Go bags should be
customized for each person household
items can include but are not limited to
of three days supply of food and water per person
medical equipment and assistive devices plus extra batteries and chargers
clearly labeled medications
emergency contact or caregiver information
a first aid kit
