Hello firstly I want to thank you for your hard work
in Preston we are currently recycling 35 percent of all of our waste
this is great but we do need to work together to increase this
here some information and a few tips on how you can help us to recycle even more
your red lidded bin is for cardboard and paper
that means catalogs & directories wrapping paper, but not the foil kind, magazines, junk mail, cardboard food packaging, cardboard boxes, toilet roll tubes and cereal boxes
unfortunately you can't put in drinks cartons, tetrapaks, wallpaper, plastic bottles or polystyrene
your yellow lidded bin is for plastic bottles, cans and glass
this means plastic detergent, shampoo, milk and pop bottles, food and drinks cans, biscuit tins, empty aerosols, clean foil, foil pie cases and takeaway containers, glass bottles and jars
please no margarine tubs, yoghurt pots, plastic trays or paper
you can also recycle all of your old textiles including towels, sheets, clothes, shoes and belts
just bag them up and place them next to your recycling bins
just no duvets or pillows please
if you live in a brown bin collection area you can use your brown bin for garden waste
that means pretty much everything from the garden including leaves, dead plants, grass cuttings, small branches, twigs, hedge clippings, wind-fallen fruit, weeds, cut flowers and house plants
you can even use it for your real Christmas tree providing you can fit it in of course
you can also recycle food waste in your brown bin or in your green food waste container depending where you live
this includes all cooked and uncooked foods such as fruit and veg, eggs, peelings, meat, fish, bones, leftovers, tea bags and coffee grinds
but please leave out any food packaging, plastic bags, general waste or liquids
if you have a brown bin you can place food waste in your bin loose or wrapped in newspaper
or if you have a green food waste bin you can get biodegradable bags from the council by popping a note on the top of the container on collection day
any waste that you can't recycle should be put in your grey bin
please remember the waste from your grey bins costs a lot more to treat and can still end up in a landfill site so try to reuse, reduce and recycle as much as possible
you can also use your local household recycling center for items such as wood, florescent tubes or batteries
remember if you need to dispose of large items or are having a clear out Preston City Council can offer competitive prices on bulky waste collections and skip hire
you can find out more information in the simply recycling handbook or online at preston.gov.uk
or by calling the relevant number on your screen for general enquiries, bulky collections, graffiti, litter line or skip hire.
