This is a film I personally love.
Great news ahead of the Oscars. 12 Years a Slave swept the Independent Spirit Awards
last night with five wins. The film won five of its seven nominations at the award show
for independent movies made on a small budget. Backstage, producer Brad Pitt spoke about his
love for the film.
I love this film. It's why I wanted to get into film. You can hear when Steve first started
talking about it. You felt it when John really finished the script. You felt it when the
cast got together and to be a part of that doesn't come along that often, and it's a
real, real privilege to be a part of and I thank Mr. McQueen for bringing us all together
to tell Solomon's story. It's been a great, great experience.
Brad is nominated for a Best Picture Oscar as a co-producer on the movie about a free
black man from the north, who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 19th century America.
Certainly, there's the issue of slavery, and it's interesting that it took a Brit to ask
the question of why more films haven't been made in America on our history, but ultimately
I find it this incredibly moving, heroic story of a man trapped in completely inhumane circumstances,
and the quest and the drive to maintain his dignity when everyone else around him is trying
to crush it.
The Spirit Awards, held on California's Santa Monica Beach, are usually quite a sunny affair.
However, this year, guests were armed with umbrellas, as heavy rain battered Los Angeles.
There's a storm coming.
Nice to know you all. If we all die here, it's in service to the film industry.
The 86th Annual Academy Awards will take place in Hollywood this evening.
