It is a very important trend
and it is fundamental, that is transparency
we heard people like Eric Schmit say "We have no more privacy"
Good
I think it is a bit more complicated but it is clear that transparency is
really something
that is now taking a huge part in our society
I had taken this photo at Singapore airport
and it had hit me
this is an example of transparency that goes too far
When you go to the toilet
there is the photo of the person who cleans and does not seem
very glad that his picture is taken and then you can put grades
to evaluate how the toilets are. It says "this screen is sanitized Regularly"
as they just clean the screen in case!
and therefore this is an example of the world we're heading to
where excessive transparency exposes the person who
cleans the toilet as he must put it name and "suffer"
people's grades
I found a few examples that illustrate this
trend. AVOID, is a plugin that you put on your
browser. Then you go to a site
you clicks twice and then it installs itself on your browser
and the concept is that this plugin will "erase" from
e-commerce sites all products that involve child labor
so here is what it looks like
to the left, you see the site without
the plugin and to the right you see the site with the plugin
and so wether the e-commerce site likes it or not
this is a sort of "layering" that is added on top of it
it brings this transparency option and removes products that are not
ethical, that do not meet certain standards
and so there are many many examples
often browser extensions. I have selected another one
if you work in finance, you will normally be interested
this is actually Tip Ranks
this is again a small extension that one has on his browser and when
one is reading an article, the scanner will
to find the name of an analyst. So there we found James Kissner
who is an analyst
from the company Jeffreys
and so all of a sudden without asking for anything, you get a small window
that will come on the right and that will give you
the Track Record of the analyst by saying '70% of his
predictions are correct
he made over 6.4%
in comparison to the market
and is 78th in 2,000 analysts
and so it is a forced transparency
on the performances of a bank's analysts. It is very
interesting and very new. Difficult to talk about finance and transparency without mentionning E-Toro
so I do not know if you know E-Toro, is the encounter between Swissquote or Etrade and Facebook
so this is a site where people who
trade currencies will go
and there, one may decide to share all trades all
transactions one does
So you see, it's like a wall of activity on facebook except
here, for eg someone has just
closed his position dollar-yen then
you get their profile and performance
and you can click on a profile and see if the person is good
in general.you see his performance, you'll see various statistics about him that
will give you information
What is interesting is that there is the concept of "follower" therefore
you can follow someone to be notified with their activity
and the notion of "copy-cat" meaning that
you have someone you find interesting, you think he has a good
performance in a market, so you copy and the system will execute the trades
for you
directly based on what this trader does
and therefore it leads to this kind of classification
where you
find the most copied traders.See, Malsolo trader has 4650
people who copy his trades and so it's probably someone
very influential
for this community and this system
I remain with finance, this is an example that has
cought my attention
it's an American wealth management firm
specializing in customers from the world of technology
and the big difference with institutions in other countries is that they put
clients on the home page
so if you go on the pictures they are all engineers at
Facebook, Dropbox, so the firms of silicone valley
but it is interesting to see
that there is transparency
in some cases and in some systems such as Wealthfront
Of course, transparency,
if it goes too far it is problematic and
it seems that there is a huge push in the other direction now
so I do not know if you see these alarming press articles
regarding facebook: "Teenagers do not go on facebook." It is clear that
on facebook there is this notion of sharing and often they parents of teens can participate
so they no longer appreciate
and systems as Snapchat are now being used, you may have heard
about Snap Chat. It is actually a
a kind of messaging system, messages are exchanged
but the messages self-destruct in ten seconds so you can not keep
longer than 10 sec
and to read them you do have to put keep fingers
on the screen why? because to make a screenshot on an iPhone
in theory one needs several fingers
and thus forcing to have a plurality of fingers on the screen, the system prevents
this manipulation of screen capture
wich still remains easy to make but...
BTW, the messages are not deleted from the server Snapchat
they remain for our friends at NSA
but it is interesting to see that there is really a push towards more
privacy and because maybe we went a little too far
with this notion
of transparency in some aspects
this is another system called Burn Note. With Burn Note, you
go to the site, type your text
and in fact the person who will receive it will have to move the mouse
over the text, so it creates a virtual ray of light
and so in theory it prevents from doing a screenshot because
you'll have to go to different places to read the whole message
as you can see there are more and more systems that exist
Fadely that came out a few days ago. You add ". Fade.ly"
to any e-mail, and then it is sent to the person in a picture format that
self-destructs after a few seconds
having this transparent imposed, we feel
the need for more privacy
a need to go back a few steps back
and also materialized by theis kind of products. This is a
phone made by Bubble, which is called Hoox. Certainly the marketing department did not speak English to give him such name
so it is an encrypted phone
Right now, not all phones are encrypted
and we will, more and more, because of this surveillance
going too far, need devices that are
much more secure and that will give us
the privacy needed
this a trend towards total transparency in my opinion
creates resistance from users. The future according to me is a balance
still to be found between excessive transparency on one side
and privacy that will need to be somehow preserved
When we speak of a phenomenon there are always instances in which
it has already happened and so we can learn from it.
Here of course is Julian Assange of Wikileaks. And Wikileaks was released, a journaliste wondered
are there countries that already function completely
transparently institutions-wise?
it happens to exist.
Sweden works like this: all exchanges between politicians
who have been logged for years
So this reporter thought she'd go and check what's in Sweden
and how is full transparency going
and so she goes to parliament, to this institution where all people
are users logged in to communicate
and she asks for their communications
and the government employee brings her an empty box
that would happen if wikileaks' dream became reality ,
the problem is that when the transparency principle goes too far
people stop using the system, stop communicating and then there is
no further accessible information
So I think it shows well
that the principle of transparency ultimately spoils
its original intention since the citizens
have absolutely nothing
allowing them to know what the politicians actually do
so this is why I think we really need to find a balance
quickly
between what we can share and
what we should be able to keep to ourselves. Let me just give small solutions
pretty low tech
but radical enough for your privacy
if you want
to make a small effort on this point
this is the desktop version
A very very simple and elegant way
to be ok at the office when you play Warface
a game we showed earlier
then of course there is the mobile version which may cause problems
these are the projects of an artist called Jo Maglia, I find the quite idea interesting
