Aso volcano repeated volcanic activities since approximately 270000years ago.
The unique Aso caldera, you can see this day, has been formed by massive eruption about
90000yeras ago.
The massive pyroclastic flow covered over from the center to the north Kyusyu Island.
Heavy volcanic ash rose up to sky and spread over whole Japan Island.
The unique geography was formed by the most powerful eruption in the world in history.
Powerful pyroclastic flow formed various geographic features and creates beautiful landscape.
Nakadake crater, feeling bless of the Earth, its activity can be looked into closely, which
is rare attraction in the world. When the activity is calm, we can see volcanic hot
crater lake. Then the active stage, huge amount of volcanic ash spread around.
Desolate prairie can be seen near Nakadake crater by the effect of volcanic gas and ash.
We can feel the breath of volcano by looking at various volcanic ejecta which tell us the
story of huge eruption.
A well-balanced scoria cone is called Komezuka. It’s formed relatively new among Aso volcanic
clusters. From the top of the cone, its unique profile can be seen.
Aso Geopark has many other attractive geosites around
Grassland in Aso is the largest scale in Japan.
The grassland has been maintained by local residents by Noyaki (burning grass on the
field) and grazing over 1000years. Precious animals and plants are living in the land
and keep unique ecosystem working.
Natural spring gushes from the ground, which is composed of volcanic products from past
eruptions. There are many natural hot springs, which shows volcanic character.
Approximately 70000 people are living inside and outside Aso caldera.
Local inhabitants are living together with the volcano and developed unique culture.
Aso Geopark, we can learn about history of massive volcanic eruption and feel the breath
of the Earth.
We value utilization and conservation of these geological heritages and inherit to next generation.
