Reading is one of the key areas that we need to develop in our kindergarten children.
This activity will improve your children’s letter recognition.
I call it ‘Letter Detectives!’
Before class, get a number of magazines and newspapers that are in English.
You will also need a highlighter and a sticky note for each child.
Hand out one magazine or newspaper to the children.
You may choose to seat the class at the tables or on the floor.
You could also have some children standing in front of their paper which is attached
to the wall.
On a sticky note, give each child a letter that they must find. Write the letter in both
capital and lower case.
Tell the children they have 1 minute to find as many of that letter as they can.
And when they find the letter, they must circle it or color it in with their highlighter.
Hand out the highlighters and then set your timer for 1 minute.
I usually use an egg timer.
When the time is up, get the children to count how many they circled.
Whoever has the most, is the winner!
When you have played this game once, you can give each child a different letter by simply
changing the sticky notes.
Now, you can play it again!
The children will love the competitive nature of this task and really enjoy reading.
