Welcome everyone, to NIWeek 2013. I am Marc Vanden Bossche, and I'm responsible for the
Network Analysis Center of Excellence, which is located at the NI offices in Belgium. Our
responsibility is to help move forward the VNA technology and the VNA products of NI
into the market space. I'm actually going to show you here a demo that's actually stressing
the speed of the VNA. Approximately one year ago, NI introduced a full 2-port module VNA.
This is not a box instrument, it is actually a very compact small VNA module that goes
into a PXI platform. It's a full-blown 2-port. Basically, we have two ports available in
the VNA, we have two sources available in the VNA that both can excite the input and
the output. It has the regular S-parameter capability, it has some nonlinear measurement
capability. What I'm going to demonstrate here is the speed of that device actually
by measuring a quite advanced device. This is an adaptive tuning chip. An adaptive tuning
chip typically is used to match the impedance between the amplifier and an antenna. Imagine
that you're actually having your cell phone and you won't have the optimal transmission,
but you're moving it around, you are touching tables and so on. At that moment, impedance
is continuously changing. With this device, you can compensate for that. What we're going
to measure here is the response of this device as the device is tuning. This device internally
has a couple of capacitants. It's basically on RF MEMS technology, and it's actually a
WiSpry component that we are measuring here, and changing the impedances while
moving the slider around. As I'm moving the slider around, the different values of the
capacitants are changing. You can see the direct response of the network analyzer. We
are basically measuring here from 1.04 GHz up to 1.92 GHz. Moving the slider changes
the values, and you immediately see the S-parameter, the S11 reflection factor, changing. Which
basically is an indication of the speed of this Vector Network Analyzer module, which
is a full 2-port module. Thank you very much for your attention.
