ANNOUNCER: From our region to yours...
MAN: I'm Jeff Overmars for Accessible Media.
Ed McQuillan was one of the racers at Ski Wentworth,
taking part in Cathy's Cup:
an annual charity race in honour of Cathy Fitzpatrick,
a former Wentworth regular who died of cancer 10 years ago.
McQuillan is a member of the Canadian Association
of Disabled Skiers, or CADS.
For the race, there's going to be a big variety
from young to old,
and people with any disability that wants to try it.
So I think there's four CADS members doing it,
so it should be fun.
OVERMARS: More than 200 people signed up for this year's Cathy's Cup.
General Manager of Ski Wentworth Leslie Wilson,
says the race is a highlight of the year.
We get participants young, old, snow boarders, skiers,
and this year we're very pleased to have
the CADS division as well.
OVERMARS: Money raised from the event is donated to a charity
of Cathy's family's choice.
WILSON: It's all about family and fun.
And so they'll have one of the categories
as the fastest woman over 40.
And the woman that beat her husband by the most time,
which is always a good one;
people always really get into that one.
OVERMARS: Wayne Barrett was a lifelong friend of Cathy's.
Their families even built cottages beside each other
and remain close today.
Cathy was affectionately known as the best ambassador
this hill ever had.
She actually took it quite personal
from the point of view of the hil; it was her hill.
And she actually would greet anybody who was here.
There was nobody who skied at Wentworth that she didn't know.
OVERMARS: Kalika Webb is another member of CADS.
She suffered a brain injury in 2005,
but hasn't let that stop her
from shredding down hills on her snowboard.
WEBB:
OVERMARS: And will you be back next year?
Cathy's Cup has become a can't-miss annual event
for skiers and snow boarders in the Maritimes.
