Consuming fruit is good for your health.
But consumption habits are changing just as collection techniques are.
The market demands more fruit that is ready-to-eat, peeled and diced but with the same quality and flavour and longer life.
Sufficient motives to carry out this research.
The research is along two lines, one of post-harvest in which the best moment for collection is determined,
and it also studies the use of alternatives to synthetic fungicides.
And the other line is in convenience products, which studies the best varieties for minimal fresh processing.
The project arose from surveys carried out among companies,
which asked about their needs for improvements to post-harvest and minimal processing.
All this with a clear objective.
The objective of the project is to foment the consumption of fruit and market garden products
from the EUROACE region of Extremadura, the Alentejo and central Portugal.
We share a common objective and also, resources.
In this research there are eight participating members, eight entities, from both Spain and Portugal,
and there is also a high level of participation by fruit producers of the zone.
The RITECA project is a chance to collaborate with other, Portuguese, researchers
and to join forces in the search for improvements in post-harvest and convenience products,
which in the end will improve the competitiveness of the fruit-producing sector.
