Most of my life, from a very young age
I've been very fascinated by food
as being your primary form of medicine.
I studied herbalism for almost two years.
During that time, I was also farming on an organic tomato farm
in Phoenix, Arizona.
Pete & I met in an outdoor setting.
So, how do you have an outdoor setting and have kids and have a family?
So, I guess a farm makes the most sense.
Cedar Sky Farm
is a family farm.
We're in eastern Kansas.
We're right on the bluffs of the Missouri river.
and we all live here on the farm with 12 goats,
probably 35 chickens,
4 roosters,
2 ducks
4 dogs
and a whole lot of wildlife.
We live here on a farm because I could never see my husband having an office job.
We had a friend who has an office job come out to help him one time,
and afterwards he was very grateful he has an office job.
So it was really nice to see the perspective of someone that's very passionate about
the outdoors and physical labor
with somebody that's very passionate about crunching numbers,
and going, "I would rather crunch numbers."
We're a farm that experiments in sustainability.
There's a lot of things that don't work out. (laughs)
We reevaluate as we go along and try something new.
Part of farming to me is being able to let go of things when it just goes wrong.
Like, I just planted eggplant; a rabbit ate a third of them, and you just have to go,
"Ugh. That's life."
My dream is to develop alternatives to what
most farmers think is available to them.
I hear a lot of times, "I wish I could eat healthier! I wish I could eat healthier!"
Well it's kind of funny, over the last couple of years water bottles have become really
popular and people all of a sudden afforded that.
Or all of a sudden we afford iPhones, but we still can't afford organic.
It's just kind of our health insurance. We eat well.
Go join a CSA, go to U-Pick Farm.
For crying out loud, google, "How to prepare Kale."
You'll get a thousand recipes.
As a friend of mine, Peter Bigfoot, down in Arizona says,
"Live what you love. And if you don't know what you love,
do a little soul searching and find what you love. And then pursue it.
