the Family Fitness program
is a nine lesson program for all children ages eight through twelve
especially those who are at risk of becoming overweight or are overweight
children learn about making healthy food choices in ways to increase physical
activity
parents attend five separate meetings three with their child
to receive information skills motivational guidance leading to
improved food choices and family support
we get the children to set goals on a weekly basis
they can get incentives for accomplishing those goals and we get
them to work with their parents to set those goals so that it's really
an effort of the whole family to make these changes because if it's not
then it probably won't happen so it's interactive teaching the parents
teaching the children and the children teaching parents and setting
those goals for themselves
to accomplished
together
Family Fitness also provides information and guidance necessary to achieve
improved diet quality and a healthy level of physical activity
physical activities outside the scope of traditional exercise are encouraged
so i think this gives a nice alternative to kids that it doesn't have to be a
team sport you don't have to be an athlete to be physically active
participants significantly improved their consumption of whole grains fruits and
vegetables and reduced consumption of high-fat items and
sugary foods and drinks
when i come here i get to learn what's better for you
and what's not so good
In setting eating goals participants report more frequent planning meals
together as a family
I had some wonderful comments from parents about
they never knew
how to cook healthy
and get their children interested in food
we all have to consider what we eat and what
kind of physical activity
doing as a
family
are we watching tv doing computers or going outside to walk together
how different that
the outcome can be from those different activities if kids
are encouraged to eat healthy and be active as kids then they're
going to grow up and to be healthier adults
