Jamin: It is good you have an end to journey towards because it is the journey that matters
in the end. Josh: Jamin, are you quoting Hemingway again?
Jamin: Yeah, dude. Goal setting can tend to be daunting and feel like a lot of pressure.
The key is to set small, attainable goals. Make sure your goals can still be achieved
but still push you. Start by setting goals monthly.
Josh: Every month, Jamin and I focus on goals in three categories: Mind, Body, and Soul.
Jamin: All three goal-setting categories that we're going to share with you today support
each other just like the foundation supports the frame of the house, and the frame of the
house supports the roof. The first of the three is Mind. The goal is to sharpen and
expand the way you think. Category two is Body. A healthy diet and exercise will prolong
your life and increase your happiness. The last category is Soul. This involves taking
time out of your daily life to slow down and recognize the deeper meaning in your life.
Josh: For example, this month my goals are for the mind category my goal is to journal
daily. For the Body category, it's to train for the Ragnar Relay. For the Soul category
it's to pray and meditate daily. Jamin: You're never going to get anywhere
if you don't have a destination in mind. Josh: The key thing to remember in goal setting
is to be fluid. If you start to track your goals, you're going to start to see trends.
You might set an ambitious goal to accomplish something everyday. You might find that that's
too difficult. When this happens, adjust it to something that's a little less demanding.
Habits take 21 days to make concrete. Sometimes you have to be patient for your behavior to
calibrate. Once your behavior calibrates then you could start to make things a little bit
more demanding. Jamin: Positive momentum should be your focus.
Get small wins early and iterate from there. As momentum builds, you'll be able achieve
more. We as humans tend to be lazy. I recommend finding a good friend, a close friend, to
help keep you accountable and so they can also do goal setting with you. By finding
a friend to keep you accountable, and you to keep them accountable, it actually creates
a fun competitive challenge for each monthly goal.
Josh: Jim, let's sum it up for them. Jamin: Send your goals monthly with small,
attainable goals that you know you can achieve but still give you pressure. We recommend
having a close friend, to add a competitive edge to your monthly goal setting. Remember
the three basic categories: Mind, Body, and Soul. Please in the comments below, let us
know how the first month of goal setting worked for you.
