In most libraries there is a sign admonishing persons: “Quiet Please.” Instead of this
subdued request, in a recent cartoon the sign read, “Shut the hell up.!” A man passing
by commented to his wife, “Everybody’s on edge these days.”
Well we are on edge. The vintage word for it
is “Up-tight.” The theological word is estrangement.
Test yourself. Are you living too close to
the edge of moral compromise?
Are you ignoring your most important relationships … spouses, children, parents?
Have you built your life around material goals
that will never satisfy?
Are you paying too little attention to your core identity as a spiritual being, undisciplined
in cultivating your relationship with God?
There are hundreds of churches and synagogues in our city who will welcome you to find a
place of “spiritual quietness” where uptightness and estrangement will be dissolved
