Samsung, one of the largest companies in the world.
Made a profit of 16-billion last year.
World wide Samsung presents its self as a technology company with concerns about social welfare.
In the home country of the company they are struggling with the death of former workers.
I was told that I have cancer, a brain tumour.
Also in Germany televisions, cameras and all the other equipment from South Korea a real hit.
According to their own statement: "Designed for Humans"
”Designed for Humans”
This work however have made the workers at Sumsung sick.
Explains the occupational medicine Kong Jeong-ok who is supporting the workers.
Already, 56 people have died at an early age.
Most of them from cancer.
That was their first job and they had no one with cancer in the family.
Most of the workers had not even smoked or drunk alcohol.
We couldn't simply not find any other explanation for the cancer that broke out in such a young age.
Former employees like Han Hye-kyoung are telling us about the workers condition in the Samsung factories.
She made LCD-Modules.
Sometimes lead residue remained on the hands.
The smell caught in the nose.
I was wearing a simple mask made of paper so I simply inhaled the fumes.
Jung Ae-jung also experienced a lack of work safety.
She has worked in semiconductor manufacturing as did her husband.
He died of leukemia in 2005.
The chemical smell of the chips hangs everywhere.
It is similar to the laundry when it is taken out of the washing machine, then it smells like detergent.
The workers inhale everything.
Samsung doesn't want to know about this scandalous situations, according to the head of the company's own Health Department.
First I regret that employees in our company are suffering from cancer.
But cancer is a frequent illness.
Even without any trigger.
Therefore I think that cancer cannot be avoided.
Obvious signs are denied.
However the industry was warned.
Already in the early 90s it cancers often occured in the production of semi-conductors at IBM.
But Samsung is not used to criticism.
Unions also don't exist.
The company video presents only sparkling clean factories.
Only after many years are independent scientists allowed to investigate the allegations.
Samsung had no systems with which they can measure the amount of hazardous substances which were involved in the delivery chain.
We have analysed it and found that some chemicals, if only in a very small amount, contained benzenes.
'Benzenes' are carcinogenic.
But Samsung still maintains that the 'Danger never existed'.
We can rule out that fact.
If I can explain we are not using blood-causing carcinogenic substances such as 'benzene' or 'formaldehyde'.
As far as I know its been like this since the beginning of the semi-conductor industry.
As a result Hwang Sang-lee was only coincidentally diagnosed with leukemia,
and not because she worked in semiconductor manufacturing.
She died in 2007 at the age of 21 years.
Since then her father has been fighting that Samsung recognizes the disease as an occupational hazard,
and that Samsung pays compensation for the full treatment costs, but in vain.
Finally, he turns to the state occupational disability insurance but aslo in vain.
Only the administrative court of Seoul comes to an indirect indictment of Samsung.
The Court finds that his daughter fell ill because, quote:
"...she was constantly exposed during her work to different toxic chemicals."
When the court came to their conclusion about the company's fault, I thought that the truth was going to prevail.
The truth always wins against the lies, because so many people at Samsung became sick and died.
However, Samsung does not want the truth.
The process drags on.
Meanwhile, the electronic giant lets these allegations be tested by,
the well known American consulting firm ENVIRON
They had certified to the tobacco industry that passive smoking is harmless.
So it is not hardly surprising that ENVIRON confirmed to Samsung that everything is fine oder.
Purchased certificate! No, no, says Samsung.
That would not have even been possible.
The biggest problem for me is that I do not speak any foreign language well.
If the study is to be manipulated in favor of the company you must be able to speak English really well,
to understand the American scientist and in a sense influence the result, if it would have been negative.
But my English is not so good.
A world market-leader with language problems.
The victims feel humiliated again.
For the victims it's not about money.
They all died with a sense of guilt towards their families.
Because they have left behind so much suffering.
Why did they have to die so young?
Their families want justice.
Samsung denies them this justice.
A company that advertises that it produces for people.
"Designed for Humans".
