I skateboard because of that feeling that you get
when you get to the bottom of the hill and you're still on your board.
I love to snowboard.
The sense of freedom up in the mountains,
spending time with friends -
there's nothing quite like it.
- I love surfing every day.
I just love being out there in my element and getting away from it all.
I really love art and writing.
It's a place I go for all my self-expression.
Roller derby's awesome because it's fast and high contact.
Directing allows me to work with all sorts of different people
and I confront new challenges in every rehearsal.
It's really exciting.
I really like drama and I really like hanging out with my friends.
- You hear about these things happening,
but you just don't think it's gonna happen to you.
- I was 12 years old, living a normal life,
and, then suddenly, overnight, my life changed.
This is the life I've always known
and sometimes it gets pretty challenging.
Having multiple disabilities,
I guess, really makes you stand out from the other kids.
- The wheelchair does make it difficult.
It's not that easy to get around with it.
My life changed.
I couldn't do the things I wanted to do.
Sometimes my friends ask me to hang out,
but things are a bit rough, so I can't make it.
- The human mind is a fragile thing.
- Mental illness can happen to anybody
- but you don't realise just how devastating it can be.
- This is Sebastian. He's my brother. He's eight years old.
- He was born at 24 weeks
and has cerebral palsy and other disabilities.
- My dad's been confined to a wheelchair since before I was born
and I've been his carer for as long as I can remember.
Four years ago, my mum had a severe mental breakdown.
I'm her only family and I became her sole carer.
I held our lives together so that she could get better
and so that she had a life to come back to.
Sometimes caring for Sebastian gets in the way of things
that me and my other two brothers want to do,
but it's worth it.
I really love hanging out with my dad
and it's nice being able to help him with things.
- The most important thing is that I got my mum back,
and I wouldn't trade that for anything else.
I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.
- Sometimes you can feel like you're alone as a carer,
but the reality is you're not,
and you can look for all these support networks.
They're a great help.
I guess, in the beginning, I didn't realise I was a carer.
I'm not a carer.
No, I've never been a carer.
I'm 24 and I'm a young carer.
I'm Catherine and I am a young carer.
- I'm not a carer. - What's a carer?
I'm Lori and I'm 17 and I'm really proud to be a young carer.
