WARSAW 1956
Directors: Jerzy Bossak, Jaroslaw Brzozowski
Editing: Waclaw Kazmierczak
The same time each year
the newrsreel chronicler sets off for a tour round Warsaw.
The chronicler counts new houses, new squares, housing estates, playgounds.
Puts down Warsaw songs and patiently awaits
for the Sun to brighten the facades of Warsaw palaces.
But 1956 is different from the previous years.
The chronicler watches more carefully and sees what he earlier tried not to see.
This also is Warsaw of 1956.
These ruins are more than playgrounds for the forbidden games.
They are home to these people.
The boy with plastered leg should blame himself only.
He forgot where he lives. He ran out the room and fell into the precipice.
Nobody understands how he survived. It was a miracle.
Fear reigns people in this house. Each child is in danger of death.
Mother! If you are busy with your work, tie your child to the bed.
The string will be its guarding angel.
Even cavemen have their moments of joy.
This mother is delighted because her child cannot walk yet.
Sleep tight, little troglodyte.
These ruins need to be removed.
Six thousand of Varsovian cavemen are waiting for rooms
that are still illegaly occupied by offices and bureaus.
We have built enough office blocks in Warsaw.
They are capable of housing all administration and headquarters.
Dwelling quarters belong to people of work and their children.
They need to be returned to their owners.
