My name is Antonio Ingroia
prosecutor in Palermo
I have been working for many years
almost twenty years in Palermo
as anti-mafia prosecutor.
I have started my career working with Falcone and Borsellino
and up today I have conducted many investigations and trials against mafia
and the relations between mafia-politic, mafia-economy
I believe with some great result.
I have had a career rich of satisfaction and success but also full of difficulties
fighting an organisation like mafia
is not easy because mafia is a system of power
a system of criminal power with several cover-ups and infiltrations
in the society, in the field of institutions, in the field of politic and economy
but also in the field of magistracy.
And when you work not only on the military mafia
but also on the relation between mafia and institution, mafia and politic, mafia and economy
it is clear that problems rise, and so come troubles
attacks
I was often the subject of political attacks, the target of delegitimisation campaigns
and denigration, I felt isolated, sometimes even criticised by the judiciary.
It is not easy to operate in these situations
but when you're honest with yourself
when you have a strong motivation
and when you have many friends that help you and encourage you, it is possible to move forward.
My choice to go in Guatemala
is neither an escape, an abandonment or even an exile
I felt the need to knock off for a certain period
from an important chapter of my life
I have completed the most important investigation of the last few years
the investigation into the so-called "negotiation between the State and mafia"
at the same time the United Nations offered me an international assignment
and I've always been convinced that the mafia must be addressed not only at national level but also trans-national
I asked for an extension to the United Nations so that I could first complete the investigation
and as soon as I completed it I accepted the task
therefore I go to Guatemala with no regrets but indeed with great enthusiasm.
Italy is going through a difficult moment
but at the same time it is affected by positive and dynamic factors.
It can be improved, it can be changed
and despite I'm going to Guatemala I'm not going forget about Italy, indeed
I always played my role by actively participating in the public debate
and I will do the same from Guatemala.
And I want to increasingly stimulate this movement
which I see growing, a movement that wants more justice and wants more truth.
And I will work hard for all of this.
If we look back, we see that for example the Italy
Sicily have been in the grip of mafia for decades
today mafia is not yet defeated, but it is forced to hide
to blend in, to stay invisible
and this means that mafia has a bit, let's say, shame
and is forced to retreat
and therefore we must strive more deeply
and above all we need the commitment of young generations.
We need a new ruling class that does not commit anymore obscene agreements with mafia.
