Toshiba is planning three models of 4K TV in 2013. The TVs, which feature a picture
with four times the resolution of today's high-definition sets, will go on sale in 2013,
the company said in Tokyo on Thursday.
One of the three will be an 84-inch model like this one. Of the other two, one will
be in the 60-inch range and the other in the 50-inch range.
So how much will they cost?
Toshiba said it will announce the prices next year and they'll be competitive .
Toshiba's first generation 4K TV, a 55-inch model, 750,000 yen in Japan, that's just under
$10,000. Earlier Thursday, Sony said it will sell an 84-inch 4K TV in Japan from November
23 for 1.68 million yen, or just under $22,000.
4K is the latest hot-technology in the TV market and companies are rushing to show and
sell such sets, but there's a problem.
There's still no way to get 4K content to consumers via TV or Blu-ray Disc.
So, for now, the sets will up-convert HD content. It's not the same as native 4K, but Toshiba
says it will look better than today's high-definition.
